A little twist on a traditional Japanese obi accessory.

This Obi Maeita (帯前板) is handmade using Western-style sewing fabric rather than traditional kimono fabric. I wanted to create something distinctly Japanese while giving it a fresh, unexpected look with fabrics you might normally find in Western-style sewing projects.

The Maeita is placed between the layers of an obi to help keep the front of the obi smooth and neatly shaped.

This piece is slightly more compact than a standard Maeita, measuring approximately 29.8 cm (11.7 in) wide.

Each one is handmade , making every piece unique. Because it is handmade, you may notice small variations or slight imperfections in the stitching.

A little pocket, inspired by an older style of obi ita
This Maeita features a small pocket between the front and back layers. Pocketed Maeita were found in older versions of this traditional obi accessory, although this practical detail seems to have become less common in modern versions.

The pocket is small — about the size of a business card — and is just right for a ticket, a small note, or another slim item.
